The Indianapolis Public Library’s African American History Committee is excited to invite your students to the Salute to Black Medical Heroes Youth Summit at Central Library. We are partnering with The Metropolitan Indianapolis Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, University of Indianapolis to offer local youth a fun, informative and hands-on experience.

The event will provide opportunities for middle and high school students to engage with practitioners through hands-on simulations, personal connections, and curated resources in preparation for medical career paths. Additionally, the event will include a mentor mixer with provided lunch. This event was created because of the lack of African Americans in the medical field. It is the hope of The African American History Committee to spark an interest in medicine for students of color, however, the event is open to students of all races. Capacity is limited so please RSVP ASAP to reserve seats for your students.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Osazuwa George Okpamen, PharmD, MBA.  George Okpamen is a multi-hyphenate innovator and investor focused on closing gaps in historically underestimated communities. He was recently named the new Senior Director of Social Impact & Innovation at Eli Lilly and Vice President of Racial Justice & Equity for the Lilly Foundation. He earned this opportunity after graduating with his MBA from the University of Michigan – Ross School of Business. A proud HBCU pharmacist-by-training with over seven years of dynamic marketing, product, and tech experience, George is excited to expand on his vision of "generational health and wealth” at every stage of his personal and professional journey. This includes his local and national community, where he still serves on the board of the non-profit he co-founded called, Pharmacist Initiative Leaders (PILs).

All participating students will get fun hands-on activities, the opportunity to speak with Black medical mentors during our mentor mixer (lunch provided), swag items, and a wealth of information and inspiration from the experts at our resource fair tables.

About the branch

As the hub of the Indianapolis Public Library system, Central Library showcases renowned architecture and services. The original 1917 building, designed by Paul Cret and constructed of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, was considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. Its six-story glass and steel-framed addition, designed by Evans Woollen, opened in 2007.
