Please join the Indiana Medical History Museum for a public program on the history of Central State Hospital.
For the 30th anniversary of the hospital’s closure next year, the Indiana Medical History Museum (IMHM) is soliciting Central State Hospital memories to add to the digital archive & memory forum, Voices from Central State. Voices from Central State includes stories from former hospital staff and physicians, patients and families of patients, and nearby residents and neighbors. We encourage anyone interested in Central State’s history to attend and share your stories with the team.

The longest continuously-operating branch in the IndyPL system began on the city’s east side in 1896 but moved to the village of Haughville after 1897. The branch’s many homes included the former town hall on Germania Avenue in which a fire in 1904 partially destroyed the building. After the fire, a storefront in the Michigan Plaza Shopping Center was constructed that operated until 2003, when the current 12,000-square-foot library opened on West Michigan Street.
