The Small Business Systems Starter Kit: What to Set Up for Your Business Before Things Get Messy
2026 Small Business Series
Tuesday, September 15
6:00pm - 7:30pm
This session walks through the essential systems every small business should set up early such as email, scheduling, payments, documents, and more. Learn how to build simple, connected workflows before you're forced to fix them under pressure.
Most small businesses don't fail because of a bad idea. They fail because day-to-day operations turn into scattered notes, forgotten follow-ups, and tools that don't talk to each other. You'll leave with a clear framework for knowing what to set up now, what to skip until you actually need it, and how to avoid the tool sprawl that quietly drains time and money.
Michael Dunbar owns Meliora Software Consulting, an Indianapolis-based software consulting firm. We help small and mid-sized businesses streamline operations through process improvement, automation, and technology implementation. He works with clients across utilities, construction, and government-adjacent industries to fix the exact kind of "scattered notes and disconnected tools" problems this session addresses. Michael specializes in helping business owners navigate endless software options to build systems that are simple, connected, and actually get used. He's passionate about helping small businesses lay the right foundation early, before growth forces a painful and expensive fix.
