Join the Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC) for Natural Essence, an inspiring and interactive experience that celebrates the beauty, history, and cultural significance of natural hair.
Through meaningful conversations, participants will explore topics such as embracing natural beauty, cultural identity, hair bias and discrimination, and the stories that shape our relationships with our hair. Together, we'll create a welcoming space to share personal journeys, exchange hair care tips, and redefine what "good hair" truly means.
The experience concludes with "Make Your Hair Flow," a creative mixed-media art workshop where participants will design a one-of-a-kind canvas using paint, textured hair materials, and artistic embellishments to express their unique beauty and identity.
Whether you're natural, transitioning, loc'd, braided, or simply passionate about celebrating Black beauty and culture, Natural Essence is a space for connection, creativity, empowerment, and self-love. As the hub of the Indianapolis Public Library system, Central Library showcases renowned architecture and services. The original 1917 building, designed by Paul Cret and constructed of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, was considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. Its six-story glass and steel-framed addition, designed by Evans Woollen, opened in 2007.
