Calling all train enthusiasts (and train curious) of all ages! Join us to learn more about trains and see elaborate model train set-ups with displays and information from the National Model Railroad Association Midwest Region/Central Indiana Division.
Members of the organization will display their full model train collections for patrons to drop in, view, experience, and learn about different types of railroading and operations in the United States (past and present).
Join us to learn about trains, historical information about trains in Indianapolis/Fort Benjamin Harrison area, as well as the hobby of collecting model trains. There is local historical relevance about trains as Fort Benjamin Harrison had a train depot, and the original depot still stands (although it has been repurposed). Come learn about this piece of the puzzle to unlocking many untold stories about Fort Benjamin Harrison and the community.
A sensory friendly hour will be offered from 10-11 a.m. with less sensory input (noise/light/crowd capacity/etc.)
The 22,000 square foot Fort Ben Branch provides easy access to Library services and collections due to its location in a high-traffic community with access to public transportation. It includes community meeting spaces and study rooms, beautiful landscaping components, and walk-up, bike-up, and drive-up material return locations. Its roof-top solar photovoltaic system will provides 80% of the building's electricity needs. The Library was envisioned as part of a redevelopment plan since the land was decommissioned and transitioned from the U.S. military to the City of Indianapolis in the 1990s.
The Branch is the first library branch in the state of Indiana to become a Certified Autism Center™ by receiving an international autism accreditation through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).
